I began this phase of stillness at a starbucks an hour from home sitting with one headphone in listening to the many conversations that filled this particular location it is a friday evening the sun was still out but it is starting to dim the sky and the warm day becomes slightly chilly I focus in for a moment as I listen to my fingers click on my laptop and notice my breathing I feel like time slowed down I take my headphones out as I choose to listen to each conversation one by one I only grasp pieces of each story wondering just what kind of day they are having that landed them at this exact spot of course I am not focusing on the work I came here to do my mind is taking me through every noise the sounds are robust and cluttered but separate all at once the barista to the left calls out a drink order as I hear the steamers in the background froth a fresh latte the espresso machine starts up cutting through the even white noise grabbing my attention I refocus back to the neutral feeling I have that is keeping me from stressing about how much I have to get done today and how much I actually don t have to do at this specific moment I almost forget about the craziness outside the front of the closed store doors forcing myself to take in these few minutes that have been in slow motion do the two older women in front of me do this much the comfort they have as they converse one with her cheek resting on her fragile rolled up fist as she listens intently I half smile and wonder if I would have moments like that in my future I try to put my headphones in but I can t help but turn to my right noticing two gentlemen next to me it sounds like they have been here a couple hours I feel as though I must leave one headphone out the men nonchalantly talking sipping at their medium sized coffees maybe one gets a refill as the other just drank that one down to the last sip most people throw out the thought of the wasteful fast paced privileged life most people live forces itself through my head the gentlemen model the importance of slowing down appreciating the bean flavor the hot coffee that turns cold enjoying every last drop making sure every penny was spent well the man to the left holds the empty cup for more than 15 minutes as they finish up their conversation the man on the right picks up their newspaper rolling it in his hands while they talk they are about to leave at the same time they stand and walk back into reality out the front doors I tried to bring myself back to my computer as I notice students fill the corners with the tables next to the closest wall plug as they plug in headphones computers and phones all plug in as they settle through their work unsettled as they finish exams and assignments will this moment be worth it as they earn their degree hours spent with their faces in their books I notice in the corner by the two armchairs placed snug behind a decorative wall two young women praying in respects to their culture without a care of the public place they chose it takes me to a common thought of how coffee can gather many differences to one location many eyes reflect through the coffee shop evaluating everyone just gathers leaving each other at their own form of peace we are amongst so many elaborate intricate personalities that we just graze with our auras do we begin to pick up on that information unconsciously becoming part of this energy of diversity taking the opportunity to block that or become a part of it my mind only pictures it as walking in slow motion past people slightly making eye contact siphoning information from the quick glance exchanged children of the hollow leaving for the sky plays on my headphones as I imagine myself connecting on another level how fitting the title is to this moment it s like the end to an 80 s movie some kind of realization people existence I find I need to take my headphones out completely enjoying every movement and sound what do we find we actually need from who we share our precious bubble with why in this moment I mosey through time labeling it as insignificant is it just a phase or living connectively without choice neural firing is happening like spiderwebbing a hundred thoughts only to let the spider pull one silk down to the ground one thought lowered down into that moment spiderwebs of created stories we store in the memory file and when we allow the spiders to crawl down past what they observe hiding comfortably behind our eyes some sense of qualia takes over what around us determines what we feel of self do we even tap into a level of existence we are supposed to be living or do we float across the perfectly cut grass and paved roads that lead us through general existence of trying to find what other people think is supposed to make us happy still listening to many conversations around me I appreciate the second my mind lets me listen to them all at once my nose picks up a full flavored aroma of a fresh pot being brewed it fills the air that surrounds the laughing barista I notice gently making a customer laugh at this hour their laugh echoes forcing a positive vibe through the loud room allowing me to still feel present and making me feel like I am exactly where I need to be I find peace in my focus as I watch this young woman laughing on her phone walking out the front door piercing through the thick wall of noise I imagine the front door closing behind slowly letting go of this boxed in atmosphere as it decrescendos behind her the final silence that targets her ears slam it disappears the door shuts how stillness can so quickly be exhausted I close my laptop smiling I decide to leave thanking those present for the time we shared I began this phase of stillness at a starbucks an hour from
